Luke 1:38
“Mary said, "Behold, the handmaid of the Lord; be it to me according to your word." The angel departed from her.

It’s the Christmas season. Those who are celebrating the real reason for the season, the birth of our Lord, know the story well.
And yet, Luke 1:26-45, the story of the angel Gabriel telling Mary that she would give birth to a son whose father is God, is probably read and re-read this month than at any other time of the year.
Even though Gabriel said, “Be not afraid,” how terrified this young girl must have been after the angel departed. Can you imagine what raced through her mind? First, she probably thought, “Was that real?” She was a virgin; how could this be? And there’s no doubt she had flashes of, “Why me?” and “What will my parents, friends, and family say about this? What will Joseph say? Will he believe me?” She sought the counsel of a wise, older woman, Elizabeth, staying for three months before returning home to “face the music,” so to speak.
And while we do not know the conversations and prayers surrounding those very human questions and the very human reality that must have been going on in her social circles, we know Mary embraced her calling and thanked God for having chosen her to raise the little boy, God-made-human, who would grow up to become the world's Savior.
This is my favorite Christmas carol this season - and this is my favorite version:
It makes me cry every time I listen.
Can you imagine Jesus learning to crawl, feed himself, and get potty trained? He had to learn to walk, write, spell, and read. Did Jesus go through the “terrible twos”? Did he have the childhood illnesses, with fever and a runny nose? What happened when He was cutting His molars? What happened when His voice deepened, and He developed body hair? What was it like to teach the Son of God manners, and how to play well with others?
I don’t imagine any of those things were automatic.
As we meditate this season on the Word of God and the birth of Jesus the Christ, give some thought to the humanness of Jesus. What His life was like before He commenced into His public calling, the real reason He was here. As you marvel about His childhood, imagine knowing, as Jesus did, how it would all end.
When we marvel at Jesus’ humanity, the entire story of His birth, life, torture, death, and then His resurrection, knowing Him takes on a whole new experience. Would you have left heaven for us….for us? The group of ungrateful mongrels that most humans are?
As you race around this season, buying gifts, traveling, scrambling to put up decorations, spend more than a little time thinking about Jesus as a toddler, then a teenager, then a young man in His 20s. Feel Him as a human - and think about what Mary must have experienced raising Him. It will take Christmas, and soon, Easter, to a completely different level.
“For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin.” - Hebrews 4:15 ESV
The Son of Man was a man in every sense of the word. And I’ve often wondered as well about what it would have been like knowing Jesus in Nazareth, before his ministry.
I ve often thought about JESUS growing up, one of his young friends killing a bird with a sling while they were playing David and Goliath. Then JESUS picking up the bird n it flying away, it's not n the bible but I love to imagine about HIM
